by pittfall on January 18, 2007

Unlike the spam emails that you and I have receive (regularly) about the “secret to the #1 position in Google’s results” that is actually related to bidding for the top position in AdWords.

There are two important things that will get your website to rank #1 using 100% whitehat techniques.

Wow! Is it even possible?

So, what is the reason that a website ranks #1? I have covered the three important aspects of SEO:

Link Popularity
Content
Age

Here are two tips to to get to #1:
1. Imitate
2. Innovate

Ok, where are you located in the SERPs for the keyterms that you want to rank for? Find out what they are doing, what is there inbound link structure, content how long have they been around? To find information like this there are many tools that can help you, or you can check them out the long way, here is an SEO tool for Firefox from SEObook.com (click here).

Is your competition listed in DMOZ, Yahoo directory, do they include .edu or .gov links pointing to their domain? See if you can secure links from some of the save sites that they have, get them. This is imitation or adhering your website to what is working in you vertical.

Now, on to innovation.

This is not only for SEO techniques to get to the first position, but also for those attempting to stay at number 1 after achieving this position.

What are you doing to provide something for your visitors that everyone else isn’t? Here are a few things that you can review for inclusion in you website:

User modified content
Blogs
Forums
Games

There are many things that your competition hasn’t attempted. So, what are you doing to provide your users new information and are getting them to visit your website more frequently?

What have you done to provide unique or innovative approaches to help your visitors?

Hi, agree with all that your saying there, but your missing the most important point – have fun, and grow a website naturally. Basically doing everything how its supposed to be done, and your site will rank well, SEO is generally about following web standards, and slightly abusing the output to your advantage, like a cleverly described ALT tag with a keyword within the description. It helps the user, but its helps good rank you too.
