Chaos as a Business Plan

by pittfall on September 26, 2006

Giving credit where credit is due, I first heard of this story on my way home from work on NPR’s Marketplace in an interview with Adam Lashinsky who wrote the story for the up and coming cover story, set to release in Forbes Magazine, October 2, 2006.

Adam paints a picture like a campus of students in the University of Technology, testing, developing and more importantly thinking about what to do next.

Here are some interesting quotes from the article:

“The company is figuring things out as it goes, and not quite as effectively as you’d expect from its stellar financial results.”

Isn’t this what we all really want? Rather than a company that thinks that it knows all and we are just there because they want us there!

“When I ask Schmidt whether his company actually has a plan, he does what engineers tend to do in situations like this: He gets up and starts drawing on a whiteboard.”

Awesome… I am not an engineer, however, when at work I find that it is very difficult to speak about an idea without explaining it or presenting it in a multi-media format, this could be . I don’t think two dimensionally, so how could I explain a thought (especially a new concept) without drawing a picture in their minds? I think and express myself in a different manner than most (ask my wife), so I find it difficult to talk to others and expect them to understand without drawing them a picture; and because my communication does not always meet with others reception of this information, I literally draw a picture. I respect that about Mr. Schmidt.

“…as the company’s big thinkers are the first to admit, most of the questions about Google aren’t answerable.”

Good, if the investors are in it for the money, shame on them (my opinion); but if they invest in Google because of what Google offers to the global community and they want to be a part of this, then that is it’s own reward.

Oh, read the full article, not for a stock tip, just for the simple realization that there are companies out there that are not in it solely for the $ money!
