DMOZ is a great directory to get listed on, but it’s so hard to get into nowadays. Seems like most editors are absent most of the time or only approve their own links. I wish there were some more people looking out for quality links.

When i buy a new, clean domain i start from directory submission. Very good way of getting backlinks, but nowadays it’s hard to find good ones. If you collect a lot of decent directories you can even get some traffic.

I think it all depends wether you “only” want to have a higher pagerank – which actually is not that important anymore. Even google does not rank your page higher just because of your page-”rank”. And the thing is, that you DO want your site to be visited, right? So what is the use of a superb pagerank if no one will come to your site?
I think it still is really important, that you submit your site to any directory possible.

Thanks for this Great Article. Directory submission really is a good way of getting traffic but the problem is I submitted my website in 200 Directories but only 50 directories accept my website and all 150 directory was a waste of time. Does any one have any idea what type of mistake i have in this?

Directories might not bring much traffic but the are definitely are viable link building solution.

I am very new to link building…i know directory submission help to get backlink…i did 100+ directory submission and i only get 3 backlink…is that good?any suggestion on what should i do?

Well submitting to good directories with a minimum page rank 4 helps to get quality backlinks but submitting to each and every directory you find on the web is just a waste of time. DMOZ directory is exceptionally good but to be listed in DMOZ will most probably take a minimum of six months and is really difficult to finda volunteer editor to review your website.

In my personal opinion, Key to success in Social Bookmarking is to submit through accounts from our region. For example: If our website is based in US or UK. To get us listed on Google.co.uk and on Google.com (for US) then we must submit our website using accounts from those regions.Thanks for sharing your excellent tips and experience.

Free directories can be useful I think but not as useful as aiming for content-related sites.

I have just begun optimizing for a few sites of mine that are new and it is such a pain to do, but I am really enjoying it.

Considering sub’n to Best On The Web.

In my personal opinion, submission to web directories should be considered as a part of every SEO campaign but the trick is to choose the ones with high traffic and relevancy.

If you are submitting your sites to a directory which has neither traffic nor high PR or relevancy to your site’s niche then you are wasting your time…..

Directories are an easy way to get backlinks and get your site index. I do think that their effect on website ranking has been decreased.

I don’t think directories carry anywhere near as much weight as they used to a few years ago because there are simply thousands of them.

And then the problem with the bigger ones is that they take ages to be entered – my site eventually entered DMOZ 18 months after I submitted it.

For most of my clients, the backlinks are the big benefit of directory listings – they’re not really EXPECTING traffic from them.

I think submitting your site to directories can help a site get indexed initially, and lay a good foundation on your SEO attempts, but it shouldn’t be your only source of links. They don’t help you get ranked highly unlike one-way links from authority sites do. There is a free service I use called Easy Submits for my directory submissions.

Both well established directories and newly ones have their own disadvantages and advantages. Maybe, it’s just that we must all know when to submit or when not to submit.

I know there’s a lot of disagreement over whether it’s even worth submitting to free directories. I do think it’s still worth it. You can target certain keywords as you do so, which can lift your rankings for them. (I know because I’ve seen it happen.)

If you’re new to the web and your site doesn’t have much content, then you probably won’t get accepted into the big established directories anyway. So submitting to the smaller and free ones can be a worthwhile start. (Beggers can’t be choosers, after all.)

I wouldn’t go overboard, though. I’d also do lots of other link building, using articles particularly. They seem to be much more effective.

People nowadays think that implementing directory submission alone will be suffiient for SEO and for receivig backlinks to their websites. But since many directories don’t delivery their websites don’t climb up in teh serp.

I think directory links are becoming obsolete. Social Media is the way to go it seems, I dont know anyone who browses through link directories and seldom does anything come up relevant in search query from a link directory besides once and a blue blue moon!

Outside of the big ones that are still relevant (business.com, yahoo and dmoz to name a few) we rarely use directories as a element of seo unless they are industry specific. Along with the low value of the inbound link, there is typically no traffic generated by these directories as well. We find it a better use of energy and budget to write great unique articles for inbound links and as bait as well.

I have found in my limited experience that submissions to directories are useful, and if you do not do it, your are doing a disservice to yourself. It is just another means of promoting your site and helping it with SEO.

I think some directories are worth submitting to but tey are only a handfull as for just a blanket statement i would say only a handful are worth submitting to otherwise the hundreds and even thousands out there are not worth wasting your time on .

a good number of smaller directories are here today and gone tommorow.

For me, based on my experience, directory submission also plays a good role on your site’s ranking. It will increase your ranking and PR and give your better SEO. But of course, you must submit your site to good directories, especially DMOZ.
