Google Gears Reader

by pittfall on May 30, 2007

In an unexpected circumstance tonight, while going through my RSS subscriptions in Google Reader, I noticed something outside the ordinary. A nice little link in the upper right of my screen saying “offline” caught my attention. So, clicking on the link started off the installation of Google Gears for Reader:
Google Gears is required to get Reader offline!
After clicking on Install Google Gears it started the download:
Google Gears Beta is ready for download
After installation of Google Gears Beta, when going back to Reader, a pop up asked if I wanted to allow Google Gears authority.
Allow Google Gears?
The only problem is that the new Google Gears errored out on IE and did nothing on FireFox (actually, it asked me to install Google Gears again).

This appears to be more like newsgroups (of old) using an offline email client.

Has anyone seen this?

If so, where you successful in using Google Gears to download your Reader feeds?

I know that Google Gears is for online/offline content and applications, but I think that there are a few kinks to be worked out.

UPDATE
Barry, over at SEORoundtable wrote a great piece today (May 31) about how Google Gears is supposed to work with Google Reader. I highly recommend it if you are considering to use this new tool from Google!
