Improve Yourself, Improve Your Website

by pittfall on January 25, 2007

I subscribe to many feeds in Google Reader, most of which are related to Search Engine Optimization and a few are not. One that I would recommend to everyone is lifehack.org. It is a bit of self-help, a bit of life management and a dash of technology. A recent post, not directly related to SEO, but dramatically relevant to the personal growth and can be related to building a better website. The post was titled “How to Break Out of Your Comfort Zone.”

“Over time, we all gather a set of constricting habits around us—ones that trap us in a zone of supposed comfort, well below what our potential would allow us to attain. Pretty soon, such habits slip below the level of our consciousness, but they still determine what we think that we can and cannot do—and what we cannot even bring ourselves to try. As long as you let these habits rule you, you’ll be stuck in a rut.”

It is interesting at how many levels that this concept can be applied to our linking and content building of websites. What are your “constricting habits?”

Do you adhere to the same linking practices, looking for something in all of the areas that have come up short?

Who is moving in your vertical?

Who is a new entry and gaining ground on you?

Someone once said that insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. As new marketing arenas break out and emerge, are you trying to utilize them in your optimization efforts? Are you including social networking, blogs and video into your SEO strategy?

This is not to say that these are viable opportunities for your website, but not researching, understanding and considering them at all means you aren’t following what opportunities may exist. Knowing your market is an important aspect, do the people you want to reach reading blogs, participating in social sites or watching video online?

Knowing what we are and what we are capable of becoming is important. The article finished with tips and techniques to break the mold:
Understand the truth about your habits.

Do something—almost anything—differently and see what happens.

Take some time out and have a detailed look at yourself—with no holds barred.

Be who you are.

Slow down and let go.

These are all tips that we all can employ to improve our website and innovate past our competition.
