Michael,
Thanks for the comment. I am certain that the drop in PageRank that Squidoo has recently had has less to do with the fact that Google is considering a new product that may or may not be competing with Squidoo, but I do love a conspiracy theory.

If Google does start demanding more from web publishers I think that users will start looking elsewhere for search results. I remember that it was so important in the early 90's that you have a connection with AOL with a single word search... could Google follow a similar path as AOL, I wouldn't doubt it, but it is still to early to assume anything at this point.

Seth,
Thank you for your comment. I wasn't taking it out of context, rather, getting your initial reaction to the news. I did like the idea of using the creative commons to publish the information on Squidoo. I do agree with your summation that bringing attention to your product, even if it is mimicked by Google is a good thing. Similar to social issues, getting people's attention is expensive, however if Google uses it's leverage to bring attention to this type of web publishing it will only add to the number of people that will want another flavor (or a better way) and will give additional exposure to Squidoo and others. Oh, and all of the buzz and links will probably help too!

Little by little Google is picking off competitors. Microsoft should really get scared, start offering a fight. Yahoo just needs to get slapped around some more. They seem to be trying to wake up but I have my doubts on their whole marketing system.
Anyone notice how Squidoo was recently devalued in pagerank? Now a competitor arrives...and it's Google. Isn't that special? For anyone reading this and you are in the search engine marketing field ( I am not by the way) , how would you feel if tomorrow Google announced that only their own SEO company were allowed to offer search engine marketing advice. Anyone else found out , and your site disappears from Google. Or better yet they stamp on it that it is a danger to visit your site. I've seen a few of these, usually the result of spammers or hackers taking over a site in some way.
Then what?

Thanks for reading. I think, though, that you took my quote out of context. By the end of my rant, I not only explained the insomnia page I posted, but pointed out why having Google imitate us was actually a good thing...
