Reflections on Five Years as an SEO Blogger

by pittfall on October 26, 2009

five years blogging SEOWhat a strange trip it’s been!

Just a few days after Google’s purchase of Blogger in 2003, I began down this trek into blogging to see the difference between a blog and other web publishing tools (such as GeoCities, now closing), specifically for their influence and impact on SERPs for my company’s websites. Not that there weren’t other useful tools to help people build a website or even an online journal, similar to blog platforms, but it did give us a glimpse of what Google saw, an indication really, of how the internet could (and did) become much more than just a place for commerce, breaking down walls that kept “average Joe” from being part of web.

In October of 2004, I stepped out and started blogging (infrequently) about SEO on Blogger. Most of these early posts were more minor entries about news or changes within the industry with some commentary. In January 2007, I really committed to the idea of bringing my experience to light with the creation of SEOpittfall on a WordPress platform. The biggest changes with SEOpittfall have included: more editorial value being added to my posts, including more thought leadership and delivering testing results and outcomes.

I appreciate all of the support from the SEO community over the past five years and look forward to more productive years to come.
(I apologize if I leave anyone out)

For my readership that has been with me through much of it, thanks (Bill, Eric & Emory)!

For those of you who have joined along the way, thanks (Angela, Sean, Craig, Melanie, Adam, Ian & Derek)!

I look forward to still being a voice for positive SEO and wanted to share in this milestone with you, Cheers!

Thanks Bill,

I actually questioned my math at first, it doesn’t seem like it has been that long… I appreciate you support and all of the positive feedback I have been fortunate to have received from you.

This is actually my first time here. It looks like a very comprehensive resource and I’m glad I came across this post first to give me some insight into your history. I do some SEO consulting but I haven’t been in the business for very long and I look forward to learning more. Congratulations on the five years of blogging!

Hey Stephen

Congrats on 5 years and I am sure a lot of coffee along the way (lol). It seems like there are a number of people this past week reflecting on what has happened in the past. Perhaps part of it is due to the internet officially hitting the big 40 this week. Wow, hard to believe. It also amazes me at how blogging has changed the landscape of the internet community and literally impacted every aspect of the SEO game.

First time to your site and look forward to reading some great and insightful articles.

Cheers

I have been tasked with becoming the in-house blogger for our web design / development company (with an emphasis on SEO), and I must say that it petrifies me. I’m scared of dispensing too much valuable info (then competitors and even potential customers use it), I’m scared of saying something that’s completely wrong (and being found out), but I suppose that is a part of adapting to a new environment.

I have been reading your blog on and off for a couple of months, and your experience shows. Anyway, I hope you don’t mind my little plug in the name!

Andrew,
It really is a challenge to keep it direct enough to give readers a reason to continue to return without spilling your important information (trade secrets or client information) and still not be like a number of other blogs and just be theoretical without having any significant amount of testing or verification. This is one of my favorite and dreadful things about blogging about SEO. Good luck on the blog and thanks for the encouragement.

5 years! WOW.. I can’t see myself blogging for that long! Musta bin quite a trip! How do you inspire yourself to continually come up with original stories like you do? Drives me nuts trying to think of something original!

Umang,
Thanks for the comment. I usually have more original stories than time to share, but most of them come from experience or research that I have done through necessity or just being the search geek that I am. As the line between the two are usually blurry, I have stopped trying to determine where it comes from.

That’s great. I can’t seem to do anything for more than 3 months without getting bored. 5 years… No way I could do 5 years unless maybe if I was in prison. Not that I’d ever do anything to warrant that. :-)
