SEO for Local Results

by pittfall on January 21, 2009

Very interesting… recently I posted about the need for Google to focus on relevancy in search results to maintain their market share that led me to look at tying a geographic location to improve relevancy and my belief that it will be the next step to reinforce universal search results. As a professional SEO consultant, I know how difficult it can be to manage the efforts to get traditional store locations in the results of the major engines. Of course, as if I had some kind of inside information, here comes a consolidated answer: getlisted.org.

GetListed.orgGetListed.org, the latest offspring from the creative minds of Pat Sexton and David Mihm. The concept behind this project is to empower businesses with the ability to monitor their exposure in local search results by giving them the ability and ease to verify their listings in the major local search products from Best of the Web, Google, MSN and Yahoo! by simply putting in their business name and zip code and the ability to monitor multiple locations. The first step to local search, just like regular search, is getting listed, getlisted.org is helping to do just that!

Here is a quick screen shot for Google:
Google - click to view larger imageclick for a larger image

As you can see, after searching for a location (based upon the name and zip code of the location), you can quickly see the visual cues of what should be done to improve your local listings. It also adds the searched location to your dashboard (after logging in). Moving on to the Overview in the dashboard:

getlisted.org - Overviewclick for a larger image

This gives a good overview of listings, citations, reviews and photos. In this case, the listing:

Google Inc
1600 Amphitheatre Pkwy
Mountain View, CA 94043

is not listed in anything… which I thought was odd, until I searched Google Maps for the Googleplex at the given address and low and behold:

google-maps-googleplexNeither of the two listings were verified and both were without reviews. Wow, these two listings are on Google Maps, but have not been verified.

So, if a business like Google could forget something as trivial as managing their own listings, it makes sense to check up on your locations as well, doesn’t it?

We’ve been ranking on page one for our primary keywords on google.com but when it came to the local google we were on page 5. We changed our geographic location on google webmaster tools and this pumped us up a bit. I would definitely give getlisted a try.

I saw this post after I commented on another one. This one caught my eye because this is how we get a lot of our business. We do a lot of business around a major metropolitan area and a lot of people search for things and include atlanta or ga in their search. So, we devise our content to target those searches and don’t even worry about our local listings. It’s got to be hard for a local retail shop with a very local customer base though. That’s funny, Google doesn’t even monitor their listings.

I checked out getlisted.org when it was launched recently and I think it’s a good starting point to see where a business currently stands in the local realm of things. The interface is very intuitive and everything loads very fast, so I would definitely recommend it when beginning your local search efforts. Interesting article but unfortunately getlisted.org requires a 5 digit US zip code which means that it does not work for companies outside the US.
