SEO, is it Really Rocket Science?

Last week, Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land posted about defending the need for SEO. So it begs the question: “is SEO really that difficult?”

I would recommend that you read Danny’s recent post and his previous post on the topic.

Can you do SEO yourself, YES! If you couldn’t, I wouldn’t write for everyone. But, if you are relying on the traffic or revenue that is produced from your website, I would recommend that you consult with a professional, hire a professional, or bring SEO in-house. I manage in-house SEO for a single firm.

At work today, Network Engineer Bob, Website Developer Joe and I had a discussion about our strengths and what each of our departments bring to the marketing and development of our sites.

Network Engineer Bob leads our network engineering department
- he can build it and it will function efficiently
- the website will not look appealing
- there would be no consideration for rankings in organic search

Website Developer Joe leads our web design and development department
- he can build it and it will function efficiently with all the bells and whistles
- the website will look awesome
- the website will not rank well in organic search

pittfall leads the SEM and SEO Department
- I can build it and it will function
- the website will OK
- the website will move to the top of organic search

However, when we combine our efforts and work as a team, we are extremely effective. So when a single person looks to build a website that will cover all aspects of development, implementation and marketing, their chances are low. Together we are more effective than we could be alone.

SEO is important topic to understand, but it should not be expected that a web developer or a network engineer to wear these hats also. The professional SEO is an extremely important aspect of marketing and should be respected.

What are your thoughts?

Please Note – The names of specific individuals have been changed to protect the innocent.

I think SEO is an Art as well as Science. It is art because it requires powerful content in the form of text and for that we need to make some research and analysis before that is called a Science.
