SEO Tips from the AdWords Camp?

What do you know? If you are anything like me, you are probably ready the weekend, finishing things up in the office so they don’t haunt you on Monday. If not, oh well.

Apparently the guys and gals down at AdWords on the Google campus had finished up their chores for the week and decided to do some cross promotion about other Google services. I think that was a great idea, so I decided to take it into my realm and speak about these from an SEO perspective.

“Today, we’ll highlight Blogger, Google Apps for Your Domain, and Google Docs & Spreadsheets – free communication tools that can be used for internal or external purposes.”

I am not that concerned with the Docs & Spreadsheets, Google Apps I may discuss in the future, but I will touch on blogging.

Blogger or, WordPress (as some of my readers prefer)
What is so important about blogging? It is a natural place to bring collateral information about the vertical or topic of your domain. I really don’t like the idea of using a blog as “linkbait,” but it is a powerful tool that can help boost organic results naturally, because you are providing relevant information. Blogging is an easy way to publish news and information, give your opinion and get feedback. Build your blog right and you will gain authority, get authority and focus the power of your authority to your domain when you want or need it.

Suggestions for blogging success:

  1. Blog from a service like blogger, not on your domain. (personal opinion, I may delve into in a later post)
  2. Stay on topic! If you stray, you can make the building to authority more difficult.
  3. Publish press releases and changes to your site. Use this to review your work and invite feedback.
  4. Promote your blog in your industry. Tell your friends, family and organizations about it, just like you would for your site.
  5. Publish a feed of your blog. Look to sources like Technorati or Ping-O-Matic
  6. Build links. Look for directories for blogs and niche directories on the topic.
  7. Write consistently. You don’t have to blog-blog-blog all of the time, just keep active at a pace you can continue like once a week.

Blogging is good because you can use it like a journal. Sort through ideas and even get feedback from others, even if it doesn’t get you very far in organic placement. For me, it helps me force myself to stop and analyze different areas of my industry that I may have overlooked, plus I can stay abreast of my industry without thinking I am wasting time.

If you have other reasons for blogging, please feel free to comment. Building a Better Website takes time and perseverance, as long as you want to get to the top and stay there!
