Google hits 10 years old today, Happy Birthdayglad to see you make it out of beta!

The Company
Google Inc. was founded in 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page to make it easier to find high-quality information on the web. The company is based on three years of research in web search and data mining done by the founders in the Stanford University Computer Science Department. Google Inc.’s headquarters are located in scenic downtown Palo Alto, California.

Google Inc. is not at present a publicly traded company, and we are currently unable to speculate on whether or when our privately-held status might change.

The Name
10^100 (a gigantic number) is a googol, but we liked the spelling “Google” better. We picked the name “Google” because our goal is to make huge quantities of information available to everyone. And it sounds cool and has only six letters.

A new camera, what a great birthday present! – see the launch

UPDATE: 09/20/2008
Google has been publishing posts to mark their 10 years on the Official Google Blog, you will find that these special posts are marked as Google at 10.

@Kimberly Bock: Glad to be of service.

I was thinking of doing a drawn out timeline of events and services, but I am sure there will be a lot of hoopla around this coming. As far as the new image delivery, why wouldn’t they want to do it themselves? It gives them the ability to do more.

Good to see that Google dropped the exclamation mark. Yahoo really should do this. It’s strange to imagine what the internet would be like without Google…

Good stuff Stephen. If you’ve seen a product launch timeline, it would be interesting to see how Google has veered away from it’s core brand over time and what themes we can pull out of Google’s product failures.

And what an amazing 10 years it’s been. Earlier this year, Millward Brown ranked Google’s brand the most valuable brand in the world.

http://www.brandz.com/upload/BrandZ-2008-RankingReport.pdf

Of course, Millward Brown’s methodology is but one of many ways to estimate a brand’s value.

But what does the Google brand actually mean?
To me, it means quick, easy access to information.
From a marketing point of view, it means to me: measurable, highly-targeted. and big reach.

Take any of these attributes away, and it’s not *really* Google.

@Danish:Judging by the rate at which Google is growing, it is extremely difficult for new search engine to beat them. In the event that an innovative search engine pops up, I am sure Google will either buy the search engine itself or employ the brains behind it. You will notice that of late Google is buying a lot of Internet startups.I foresee that this trend will continue and Google will become bigger and bigger.

Jeez, its only been 10 years and Google are already one of the most loved brands in the world! It took Coca-cola and McDonald’s years to achieve.

The maybe a massive company but you have to admire their liberal ethos and dedication to providing an unparalleled service.

I wish “Anatomy of a search engine” was my thesis!

10 years – feels like I’ve been Googling for about 50 years, although I’m only 30! What would we do without it!

WoW it’s really historically enlightening to use this old version. So much have changed and new keywords have appeared in the last 10 years. Just amazing.
