Why I Blog – SEOPittfall.com

by pittfall on April 14, 2007

Recently, Eric Hebert tagged me with this topic and I though that it provides for insight into what SEOPittfall is about, it’s purpose, what I am trying to accomplish with my blog.

Why I Blog

1. Build my Reputation.

A professional reputation is as important as it ever was and in today’s online world it is easier to build one than previously. Similar to a resume, my writing provides for transparency and give others more information about me, my thoughts and how I think. This is a proactive effort to make sure that I am promoting myself in a positive manner. There are many other ways to accomplish this, with social networking websites, however, my blog allows for me to provide a history of what I am about. I want to be a voice online in the areas of my expertise and this blog allows that to happen.

2. Provide Insight on Relevant Topics.

There are many topics on search engine marketing, optimization just happens to be one of them and this is the area of my work and an area that I enjoy researching and understanding. Because of the many facets of SEM that are interrelated, I write about these topics and provide my interpretation and insight on these topics.

Ultimately, I want the web to be a better place for users. The only way I can see this happening is to help others provide what users are looking for, that is the purpose of SEOpittfall.

3. Encourage Debate.

I like to hear what my readers have to say, especially on the topics that are interesting to me. SEOpittfall is a place for people to discuss topics and share their opinions.

If I write about a particular topic, there is a personal interest in it. I want to hear from others with similar interests. I did not start this blog to push my own personal manifesto, however, through my years of research in in search marketing, I have learned far more from others when engaged in debate and discussion than I have by pure research.

Everyone has something to offer. I have learned this and it has been reinforced over the past 8 months that I have really blogging. I have had opportunities to meet people and discuss topics that I would not be able to do because of my environment. The socialization of my blog has been quite a treat.

4. Report my Research.

I like to share, this is not some direct desire to be recognized, rather another step in processing information. When writing, I see things and ask question (even if to myself) that I didn’t consider during reading. When others provide debate, this takes these topics even further. There is more information being generated than anyone can handle alone, I like bringing topics of research and bridging them with others resources.

5. Create a Journal.

I have been studying algorithms for many years and the changes that happen, whether subtly (BigDaddy) or drastically (Florida). The toughest part of research over a long period of time and on a topic that is diverse and always changing like search engine marketing, is to know what changes have gradually happened and what how they have been addressed.

I write things down all the time, but I have never had a journal, per say, but the blog allows me to time and date stamp these topics for future reference.

Extra – Not Reasons for Blogging.

I don’t blog to make money. This may change, however, when and if this does occur, I will be sure to let my readers know. I want to be sure that everyone knows that I do not try to hide anything, I want to be totally transparent. For this reason, I do not want others to use this as a platform to promote themselves directly, I want to give others help to do for themselves and their users.

I was tagged by Eric Hebert at Evolvor.com, which is great resource for promoting yourself online plus information on marketing and advertising on the web with a media approach. I enjoy reading his posts and catching up with familiar and introduced to new media. I recommend that you stop by.

I would like to pass along the love by asking other bloggers that you may or may not be aware of and encourage them to respond to this topic, Why I Blog:
